Looking back on 2018 and looking ahead to 2019

Looking back on 2018 and looking ahead to 2019
2018 was a special year for Jelena, in which her foundation developed further and special milestones were reached.

In February, Jelena’s new full-length dance production (UN)BOUND premiered in De Nwe Vorst. In 2018, (UN)BOUND was also performed in Theater Kikker (Utrecht), Julidans (Amsterdam), Theaters Tilburg, AINSI (Maastricht), De Verkadefabriek (‘s-Hertogenbosch, during November Music) and InsBlau (Leiden).

In the past year, Jelena developed a workshop on partnering, with material from (UN)BOUND. She gave the workshop, together with (UN)BOUND-dancers Noëmi Wagner and Blazej Jasinski, to students of the Fontys Dance Academy and during the kick-off of the new dance season in Tilburg.

Two interviews with Jelena appeared in 2018, one in MestMag and one in the VPRO Gids, which focused on Jelena’s collaboration with composer Dyane Donck. Jelena’s performance (UN)BOUND was also given a 4-star review by Theaterkrant.

Showings of Your Approval is Not Essential

The dance film Your Approval is Not Essential, which Jelena made in 2016 with director Leen Michiels, was shown in 2018 at the Moving Futures Festival (where Jelena’s other dance film Interlude, made with Harrie Verbeek, was also shown), during Cinedans (in EYE Amsterdam and ‘on tour’ in Zürich and Helsinki) and during the Dutch Dance Days (Maastricht).

Commercial work: Lexus

With photographer and video maker Mike Roelofs, Jelena worked on a commercial for Lexus. In the choreography, performed by dancer Nicole van den Berg, both the elegance and class and ferocity of the Lexus RC F are expressed.

Two-year subsidy from the province

In the autumn of 2018, Jelena received the news that the province of Brabant honored her two-year subsidy application for 2019-2020. This means that Jelena can fully devote herself to a new thematic ‘umbrella’, from which a full-length performance, an art documentary and a new dance film will emerge. The central thematic focus for 2019-2020 is the phenomenon of tunnel vision, when someone pushes everything aside to achieve a single goal. How does this process work, and does the end really justify all means?

Recordings for new dance film Naar Huis

In the warm summer of 2018, the filming of Naar Huis took place, a new Branded Cinema production by Jelena and director Harrie Verbeek. In the film, several family members gather as their father draws his final breaths. Actors Huub Smit, Hans Dagelet, Liz Snoijink and Beaudil Elzenga and dancers Patricia van Deutekom, Kim-Jomi Fischer and Rowan van den Boomen portray the troubled family members.

Hit Me Productions Dance Day

In 2018 Jelena has teamed up with Hit Me Productions. On September 17, she took part in a special industry programme, in which professionals such as programmers, communication staff and choreographers discussed the position and challenges of dance in the contemporary performing arts landscape. Jelena also presented her working methods and projects.

Exclusive preview of Naar Huis

In December 2018, an exclusive viewing of Naar Huis was organised for cast and crew, professionals and programmers at Natlab in Eindhoven. The audience was unanimously moved and impressed by the end result.

Looking forward to 2019

There are many things to look forward to in 2019: the official premiere of Naar Huis, a new tour of (UN)BOUND to various theatres in the Netherlands, and of course work will start on the new thematic umbrella on tunnel vision. For this new umbrella, Jelena will talk to top athletes, sport psychologists and other experts. Keep an eye on Jelena’s website, Facebook page, newsletter and Instagram to keep up to date with the creation process.
